We are very excited to announce that Life Matters will be delivering safeTALK for the first time in the new Hope Centre for only $10. Thanks to the amazing support from our community and Otago Community Trust we can heavily subsidise the workshops valued at $95 for only $10. For this $10 workshop you will receive a workbook, sticker and wallet card.
We will be running regular safeTALK workshops in our new Hope Centre for all to attend but especially our volunteers. We are experienced and delivered to more than 300 people last year.
safeTALK is a half-day alertness training that prepares anyone 15 or older, regardless of prior experience or training, to become a suicide-alert helper. Most people with thoughts of suicide don’t truly want to die, but are struggling with the pain in their lives. Through their words and actions, they invite help to stay alive. safeTALK-trained helpers can recognize these invitations and take action by connecting them with life-saving intervention resources, such as caregivers trained in ASIST.
Since its development in 2006, safeTALK has been used in over 20 countries around the world, and more than 200 selectable video vignettes have been produced to tailor the program’s audio-visual component for diverse audiences. safeTALK-trained helpers are an important part of suicide-safer communities, working alongside intervention resources to identify and avert suicide risks.

safeTALK gives people the knowledge to recognise when someone is struggling with thoughts of suicide. It also gives people the confidence to openly ask the questions that could be lifesaving. It helps them to connect the person with suicidal thoughts to lifesaving resources. We understand that many children are unlikely to tell their parents so friends and trusted adults play a huge role in being that support.

1. I feel a lot more comfortable with the topic of suicide and how to approach the subject. Before the training I was not aware of how common suicidal thoughts are in NZ but now after training I am more aware.
2. I thought it was very helpful and I learnt a lot. It was good to talk about a topic that is often avoided.
